How Did They Get My Phone Number?
MTA does not release or sell customer telephone numbers, but the information listed in the MTA Directory is part of the public record. Telemarketers use phone books, even old ones, to get phone numbers. There are other, less common ways telemarketers get phone numbers. According to eHow:

- • Where you’ve applied for credit may resell your information
- • A random dialing machine may stumble upon your number
- • Information you provide when entering a contest, can be sold
