Omit Address — Remove the address from your directory listing

Non-Listed — Omit your number from the telephone directory, but not from directory assistance information (411)

Non-Published — Omit your number from both the telephone directory and directory assistance information (411)

Vacation versus Disconnect — If you disconnect your telephone prior to the directory close date (late December of each year), your number will not appear in the following year's directory. Stop Telemarketers
Get on the national Do-Not-Call registry to discourage commercial telemarketers from calling your residential and wireless numbers. Call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you wish to register (for TTY, call 1-866-290-4236). Or register by Internet at http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/donotcall/

How Did They Get My Phone Number?
MTA does not release or sell customer telephone numbers, but the information listed in the MTA Directory is part of the public record. Telemarketers use phone books, even old ones, to get phone numbers. There are other, less common ways telemarketers get phone numbers. According to eHow:

  • • Charities you’ve supported may share your number
  • • Where you’ve applied for credit may resell your information
  • • A random dialing machine may stumble upon your number
  • • Information you provide when entering a contest, can be sold
